We offer saliva or blood testing in our office. For saliva, it’s non-invasive collection asks patients to easily spit into a plastic tube. This sampling method allows patients to collect saliva at home at specific times. For example, cortisol should be higher in the morning to get us up and lower at night to prep us for sleep. If you feel like you’re still tired in the morning after 8 hours of sleep and more productive at night, it may be a sign of cortisol imbalance.
Why Test Hormones?
Hormones are active in every cell throughout the body and control different aspects of our health such as moods, memory, energy, sleep, libido and fertility. They not only regulate our immune system and response to stress, but help maintain bone and muscle mass, too. If cortisol is off it can throw off insulin regulation which can affect thyroid hormones. During the post partum period we go through so much and can have post partum depletion. It can take almost up to a year for female hormones to get back to normal after baby and that’s if we take proper care of ourselves. Because our hormones do and control so much, it’s important to keep them balanced.
Imbalanced hormones can be seen in:
Fatigue & energy levels
Cardiovascular health (blood pressure, clotting, lipids)
Neurology (migraines, sleep, pain)
Mental health (depression, anxiety, cognitive function)
Immunity (infections, autoimmune disease)
Metabolism (blood sugar regulation, tissue repair)
Bone density (osteoporosis)
Physical appearance (skin, muscles, hair)
We can check for full hormone panels that include estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, DHEAS and cortisol.
